Bichon Frise Dogs would be considered by most people to be “high maintenance”. This means that a lot of care should be given in order to maintain the stature of these adorable little dogs. So how do you care for your charming and intelligent new friend? Caring for and training your Bichon Frise can be quite a bit of work. However, with patience, your efforts will be rewarded.

Let us first talk about the coat. This is one of the most distinguishing characteristics of Bichon Frise dogs. Their coats can be solid white or white with apricot, cream or gray markings. With their extraordinary coats, they also make outstanding show dogs.. Their curly coat needs regular brushing and clipping to keep it free of mats, because mats can form easily and quickly without brushing. A bath is needed at least once a month. The coat doesn’t shed and is one of the best breeds for allergy sufferers. However, human sensitivity to dog fur and dander varies considerably. Besides the coat, you should also take care of the nails and teeth of Bichon Frise dogs. In case you do not know what to do by yourself, you might want to hire some professional dog grooming services to do the job for you.

Another aspect that you should concentrate on is the training. Remember to train your Bichon Frise dogs as early as possible in order to establish the basics of proper behavior. And, be consistent with your teaching. Do not use different commands in order to get the same response as this will only serve to confuse your Bichon Frise dogs. If you need help with the training of your dog, there are some resources available to help you. You can always go to your library and take out some dog training books. There are also different programs available that deal with training dogs.

An example of a perfectly trained Bichon Frise is a dog named Balto. He is a champion Bichon who was recognized last year as the Number one Bichon Frise in the United States for American Kennel Club Agility. He won the inaugural National AKC Agility invitational in the eight-inch jump class. That must have been quite an adorable sight to see a little white ball of fur maneuvering his way through the course and accomplishing all of the tasks he was trained to do.

These dogs became popular with the French royalty in the sixteenth century. The name Bichon Frise comes from two French words and literally means curly lap dog. The Barbet Water Spaniel and the Poodle were the ancestors of these dogs. They are similar in appearance to, but larger than the Maltese.

Bichon Frise dogs do not like to be left alone for more than a few hours and they need a lot of companionship. These friendly, affectionate little dogs love cuddling and are happiest when they are part of a family that takes them everywhere. They get along very well with other dogs and pets, and are excellent with children.
