Since the time of British rule in India, Dehradun has acquired a name for itself as a very good educational hub. Dehradun has been famous for its schools for decades now. Some of the names that almost every Indian is familiar with are Doon School, St. Joseph\’s Academy, St. Thomas\’ College, and Welham Girls School and Welham Boys School. While some of them are strictly girls or boys school, a few of them are co-educational with boarding facilities. Doon School: One of the most famous educational institutes in the country, the Doon School was established almost a century back in the year 1935. With sprawling landscape, the school offers many extra-curricular activities apart from class-room education. The school follows the ICSE system for examination passing. Some of the famous people who are the alumni of this prestigious school include former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, politicians like Mani Shankar Aiyar, Kamal Nath, the former editor of Financial Express Swaminathan Aiyar, Aroon Purie, the founder of India Today and famous journalist B G Verghese.

Welham Girls School: A boarding school for girls, it follows the ICSE board for school passing examination.

Welham Boys School: Affiliated to ICSE, it is the boarding school for boys built at around the same time as its girls school section.

Rashtriya Indian Military College: RIMC is another prestigious school for boys in Dehradun. Traditionally it has been famous for feeding the National Defence Academy with young, talented boys who later go on to join the Indian Armed Forces.

Apart from housing some of the best schools in India, Dehradun is also famous for its colleges. The Himalayan hill station is home to the Forest Research Institute of India, Indian Military Academy, Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology. Some of the Dehradun Colleges are:

Forest Research Institute: it is one of its kind of institutes in the world where it primarily studies on how to conserve forest land. It was established in the year 1906 and is spread in a 450 hectares land. Its architecture is styled in the Greco-Romanian and Catholic style of architecture.

Indian Military Academy: The IMA started in the year 1932 and has been churning out the best of the Army cadets in the country.
